Can you imagine this institution being around since the early 1900s? Melbourne Polytechnic has a rich history woven into the fabric of Melbourne. It all started with a pressing need for skilled tradespeople in the early 20th century. The Education Act No. 2301 of 1910 paved the way for the establishment of technical schools to bridge this skills gap. This very institution, Melbourne Polytechnic, finds its roots in this era. It began its journey in 1912 as Collingwood Technical School. The school’s early days were humble. Housed in the former Collingwood Town Hall and Court House, it welcomed 57 eager boys ready to learn carpentry, plumbing, engineering and bricklaying. They attended classes in the evenings, often after long days of work or even their paper rounds. Over time, Melbourne Polytechnic grew, mirroring the evolving educational landscape. It transitioned from a modest technical school to a renowned institute offering a diverse array of vocational and higher education courses across multiple campuses. This evolution signifies Melbourne Polytechnic’s unwavering dedication to providing accessible and practical education, shaping skilled individuals and contributing to the vibrant tapestry of Melbourne’s workforce.
