Did you know Melbourne Park wasn’t always called Melbourne Park? Originally known as Flinders Park it gained its current name in 1996. Then-Premier Jeff Kennett wanted to boost Melbourne’s international profile. The name change was controversial. Some compared it to renaming Stade Roland Garros Paris Park. But today Melbourne Park is synonymous with the Australian Open.

Melbourne Park is more than just a tennis venue. It’s a massive sports and entertainment precinct. It hosts the Australian Open every January. The park boasts impressive arenas. Rod Laver Arena is the largest seating 15000. John Cain Arena holds 10500 and Margaret Court Arena 7500. All three feature retractable roofs. This ensures play continues rain or shine. Kia Arena a newer addition seats 5000. There are also 35 outdoor Greenset courts.

The Australian Open isn’t the only event at Melbourne Park. The venue attracts major international performers. It’s one of the city’s largest venues. It hosts a variety of sports. Netball and basketball teams play home matches here. In the past Melbourne Park hosted ice skating track cycling international swimming and motorsport events. In 2025 the Australian Open even featured pickleball. The AO Pickleball Slam offered $100000 in prize money.

Melbourne Park’s transformation is impressive. A $972 million redevelopment took place between 2010 and 2022. The project included building new arenas upgrading existing ones and creating new facilities. The redevelopment also enhanced accessibility and connectivity. This modernized the entire precinct. It made it a world-class venue for sports and entertainment.

Melbourne Park has hosted memorable events. Rod Laver Arena saw epic battles between tennis legends. Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer played unforgettable finals there. Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal’s 2012 final was another highlight. It was the longest Grand Slam final in history. John Cain Arena has seen its share of excitement too including the longest women’s singles match in a Grand Slam. The venue has also seen incredible comebacks. In 2003 Lleyton Hewitt’s Davis Cup victory over Roger Federer was legendary.

Melbourne Park’s journey from Flinders Park to its current status is remarkable. It’s a testament to vision investment and the enduring appeal of sports and entertainment. It’s a vital part of Melbourne’s cultural landscape. It continues to evolve. It remains a premier destination for events. From the legendary tennis matches to concerts and other events Melbourne Park offers a vibrant and exciting experience.
