Melbourne Chinese Bible Church. A beacon of faith nestled in West Footscray. The church’s story begins in 1980. A small group of Cantonese-speaking Christians from Hong Kong started it. Imagine them, just twenty strong, gathering in a rented hall at the Baptist Theological Seminary. Their voices, filled with devotion, echoed in the small space. English translations accompanied the Cantonese sermons, bridging the language gap. Melbourne Chinese Bible Church was officially established on April 6th, 1980. It became a member of the Baptist Union of Victoria. The church’s early years saw them moving from the seminary to the Y.W.C.A. Then they moved to St. Alban’s Church, always seeking a place to call home. A pivotal moment arrived in 1986. The church secured a lease at East Kew Baptist Church with help from the Baptist Union of Victoria. Around this time, some members living in the northern suburbs formed a new group. This eventually became the Central Chinese Baptist Church. In 1988, East Kew Baptist Church merged with Melbourne Chinese Bible Church. This strengthened their mission to share the Gospel with Melbourne’s Chinese community. The church’s outreach continued. An evangelistic group formed in Knox during the 1990s. It later blossomed into the Eastern Chinese Baptist Church in 1998. Melbourne Chinese Bible Church finally found a permanent home. They moved to their current location on Barkly Street in April 2005. Today, Melbourne Chinese Bible Church stands as a testament to its humble beginnings. The church offers services in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin. It embraces a diverse congregation. It nurtures spiritual growth through Sunday School, prayer groups, and Bible studies. It continues its mission of serving God and the community. The church has even run a Chinese language school since 1988. This demonstrates its commitment to both faith and cultural preservation.
