Originally known as Altona Stadium. Melbourne Ballpark has undergone several renovations. These upgrades ensure it remains a top-tier facility. A major upgrade in 2012. It coincided with the arrival of the Melbourne Aces. A new infield surface was installed. It featured game-day synthetic grass by AstroTurf. In 2019 a new video screen was added. These improvements keep the park modern.
The Melbourne Ballpark can hold 5,000 spectators. The main grandstand seats about 2,200. Approximately one-third of these seats are under cover. Hills run down each base line. TV-standard lighting illuminates the field. Ample on-site parking is available.
Melbourne Ballpark has a rich history. It hosted the Melbourne Monarchs and Bushrangers. These teams played in the original Australian Baseball League. After the league’s collapse in 1999, the stadium was primarily used by Baseball Victoria.
The Melbourne Aces have called it home since 2012. They moved to Melbourne Ballpark. This provided more convenience for Aces fans.
Melbourne Ballpark hosted the ABL All-Star game six years in a row from 2012 to 2017.
Beyond baseball, Melbourne Ballpark also hosts softball events. It has hosted Australian Softball National Championships since 1990. In 2006, it hosted the inaugural Commonwealth Softball Championships. This event included teams from New Zealand, Australia, Samoa, and South Africa.
Melbourne Ballpark also has an interesting aviation history. From 2008 to 2010, it served as a visual flight rules advisory lane. Aircraft tracked from this waypoint to Moorabbin Airport.
Today, Melbourne Ballpark continues to be a hub for sports. It is located in Altona. It’s an easy 15-minute drive from Melbourne CBD. You can reach it via the West Gate Freeway. Public transport is also an option. The Werribee Line from Flinders Street station takes you to Laverton station. From there, it’s a 10-minute walk to the ballpark.
