The search for a new airport began in 1958. Several sites were considered. Tullamarine was chosen for its proximity to Melbourne and lower development costs. In 1959 the Commonwealth Government acquired vast grassland in rural Tullamarine. Construction began in the 1960s.

Prime Minister John Gorton officially opened Melbourne Airport on 1 July 1970. Essendon Airport continued handling domestic flights for another year. The first Qantas international flight took off to San Francisco. The initial design was ambitious. It included a cinema and an Astrojet Space and Science Centre.

But Melbourne Airport wasn’t just about planes. It was a destination in itself. People dined at the TopAir restaurant. School excursions toured its innovative aviation infrastructure. The airport was a hub. Qantas and Virgin Australia used it as a major base. It handled more domestic freight than any other airport in Australia.

Over the decades Melbourne Airport expanded. The terminals grew from three to four. Runways were extended. Car parks multiplied. Hotels sprung up to accommodate travelers. In 2005 the airport prepared for the arrival of the Airbus A380. It became the first airport in Australia capable of handling this giant aircraft.

A major expansion in Terminal 2 cost $330 million. It included new lounges retail facilities and a new satellite terminal. The baggage handling capacity was greatly increased. More recently a fourth terminal opened dedicated to budget airlines. This was a first for a conventional airport in Australia.

Today Melbourne Airport handles millions of passengers annually. It serves domestic and international destinations. The airport continues to grow and evolve. A third runway is planned.
