“This place is huge! What do they even do here?” Melas Park often sparks that question from first-time visitors. You might be surprised to learn that this sprawling park, right here in Chicago, wasn’t always a haven for sports enthusiasts and dog walkers. Leased from the Metropolitan Sanitary District, Melas Park sits on land outside of Arlington Heights’ boundaries. It’s a testament to the power of collaboration, jointly managed by both Arlington Heights and Mount Prospect Park Districts. While the eastern side boasts soccer fields and open spaces maintained by Mount Prospect, we’re standing on the western side, developed by Arlington Heights. Imagine the crack of the bat meeting the cheers of the crowd. That’s the sound of Melas Park coming alive, especially after 2012. That’s when four premier lighted softball fields received a major upgrade: synthetic turf infields. This change wasn’t just about aesthetics. It significantly increased player safety and reduced those pesky rain delays, making way for tournaments like the 2019 Arlington Turf Classic. But Melas Park is more than just home runs and goals. Hidden in plain sight is Canine Commons, a 1.82-acre dog park where furry friends can frolic freely. And for those who prefer two legs to four, a 1.3-mile walking path winds its way around the park. Melas Park reminds us that sometimes, the most unexpected places hold the greatest potential for recreation and community.
