Melantias, perhaps named for its dark soil or the ancient Melanditae tribe, held a strategic position on the road to Constantinople. Its name appears in Roman itineraries like whispers on the wind, markers on a forgotten map. Imagine Emperor Valens passing through in 378 AD, his imperial villa a brief respite before his disastrous campaign against the Goths. Melantias was no stranger to the tides of war.
