Melanie Reizes, as she was known before marrying Arthur Klein, found her calling after reading Freud’s “On Dreams” around 1914. By 1919, she was charting new territory, analyzing children. This groundbreaking work led to her first paper, “The Development of a Child,” in 1921. Invited to London in 1925 to present her research, Klein made the city her permanent home in 1926. She later became a British citizen in 1934. At 42 Clifton Hill, a semi-detached house built around 1840, Klein’s influence blossomed. Interestingly, she resided not far from her professional rival, Anna Freud. This proximity fueled a division within the British Psycho-Analytical Society that continues to this day. Klein transformed her home’s interior with the help of Ernst Freud, Sigmund’s son. His Bauhaus design, though modern, was perhaps an unusual fit for the Regency house.
