Gazing at the Melanchthon-Kirche, one might wonder about its unusual tent-like shape. This unique design sets the Melanchthon-Kirche apart in Bremen-Osterholz. The church has a rich history, intertwined with the community it serves. Originally, a smaller church called the Dankeskirche stood on this very spot. Damaged during World War II, the Dankeskirche was temporarily repaired. A new congregation formed in 1946. They later added a community center and youth house. Finally, in the late 1960s, the Dankeskirche was demolished to make way for the Melanchthon-Kirche we see today. Designed by architect Heinz Lehnhoff, the striking tent-like structure was completed and dedicated in 1968. The Melanchthon-Kirche takes its name from Philipp Melanchthon, a key figure in the Protestant Reformation. The church’s nave reaches a height of 17.5 meters. Interestingly, the church is difficult to heat. During the winter months, services are held in a smaller, warmer “winter church”. The soaring 32-meter tower underwent renovations in the summer of 2009. Within the tower hangs a set of four bronze bells, cast by the renowned Otto bell foundry in Hemelingen. These bells resonate with the tones a’, h’, d”, and e”. They have diameters of 916 m, 816 m, 686 mm, and 611 mm, filling the air with their rich sound. The Melanchthon-Kirche also houses a 22-register organ. Built by Alfred Führer in 1971, this organ adds to the church’s character. It accompanies the congregation’s hymns.
