Twisting skyward before you stands Meistdeutigkeit. This thought-provoking sculpture challenges perceptions and sparks conversation. Created by Olaf Metzel, it graces the entrance of Bonn’s World Conference Center.

In 1993, the German Parliament’s art advisory board commissioned Metzel to create a sculpture. This was for the entrance area of the former Parliament building in Bonn. This decision came despite some negative public reactions to his previous works.

Meistdeutigkeit reaches over six meters high. It spirals upward in a tornado-like form. Its widest point is about 6.5 meters. Metzel constructed it from galvanized steel sheets. These sheets were recycled from old bicycle racks.

The sculpture’s striking shape often draws comparisons. People see a chain carousel or an oversized basketball hoop. Standing before Günter Behnisch’s steel-and-glass architecture of the old Parliament, Meistdeutigkeit creates a deliberate contrast. Yet it also enhances the building’s lines.

The name Meistdeutigkeit is quite fitting. It translates to “Multiple Meanings”. The bicycle racks have been repurposed. Metzel cleverly uses their original space-saving design. He interlocks the individual pieces.

Werner Sobek was responsible for the structural engineering. The design had to withstand wind and snow. The core consists of thin-walled. U-shaped channels from the bicycle stands. These are spot-welded together with thin tubes.

Olaf Metzel was born in Berlin in 1952. Today, he lives and works in Munich. From 1971 to 1977, Metzel studied in Berlin. He also received a scholarship for a stay in Italy. He has held a professorship at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich since 1990. From 1995 to 1999, Metzel served as president of the academy.

Metzel’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions. These include solo shows in Hamburg. Belgrade and Munich. His pieces can also be found in public collections. These include the Kunsthalle Hamburg.

Metzel is known for his subtle irony. Sometimes, it has been seen as provocation. The sculpture consists of prefabricated metal parts. These are like those used for bicycle racks. This choice seems odd for a place once meant for politicians’ cars. Is Metzel suggesting an alternative way to travel? Is he commenting on the Bonn government’s short time in power?

Even the title encourages varied interpretations. The sculpture calls to mind Marcel Duchamp’s Bottle Rack. Its loose metal chains also evoke a chandelier. This may represent the end of a political era focused on appearances.

Meistdeutigkeit invites playful engagement from viewers. It can also be seen as an ironic take on meaningless public art. It leaves you to decide. A sculpture crafted from repurposed bicycle racks. It stands as a testament to transformation and interpretation.
