How about we admire a testament to Ottoman ambition right here? This is the Sultan Ahmed Mosque. Many know it as the Blue Mosque. It stands proudly beside the ancient Hippodrome. The Blue Mosque faces the Hagia Sophia.

Sultan Ahmed I, a young ruler, wanted to create something special. He wanted his mosque to rival the Hagia Sophia. Construction of the Blue Mosque started in 1609. It finished in 1616. The mosque quickly became an important symbol of Ottoman power.

The Blue Mosque got its nickname from its stunning interior. Over 20000 handmade ceramic tiles decorate the inside. These Iznik tiles show flowers, trees, and abstract patterns. Blue is a dominant color among the decorations. Natural light floods in through more than 250 stained-glass windows.

The architect, Sedefkar Mehmed Agha, designed a perfectly balanced structure. He was a student of Mimar Sinan. Mimar Sinan designed Istanbul’s Süleymaniye Mosque. The Blue Mosque’s design shares some similarities with it. The central dome reaches 77 feet in diameter. It soars 141 feet high. Four large pillars support the dome. Eight smaller domes cascade around it.

Interestingly, the Blue Mosque has six minarets. This caused quite a stir. At the time, only the Kaaba in Mecca had that many minarets. Some people were offended. Sultan Ahmet then ordered a seventh minaret for the Great Mosque in Mecca.

The Blue Mosque can hold 10000 worshipers. Many Muslims come here five times a day for prayers. The carved marble minbar helps the Imam’s voice carry. Everyone can hear him clearly.

Sultan Ahmed I did not live long after his mosque was completed. He died a year later. Now, he rests in a mausoleum just outside the mosque walls.

Non-Muslims can enter through the south entrance. The west entrance boasts the most elaborate decorations. Remember to dress respectfully. Shoulders and knees must be covered. Women must wear a headscarf.

The Blue Mosque faced controversy during its construction. The Sultan used public funds. Normally, war spoils paid for such projects. Despite this, the mosque became very popular. It gave its name to the surrounding Sultanahmet neighborhood.

Over the centuries, the Blue Mosque has undergone restorations. A major restoration finished in 2023. Today, the Blue Mosque remains a vibrant place of worship. It stands as a lasting symbol of Istanbul. It welcomes visitors from all over the world.
