In 1865 a chair for Pathology was established. This marked a pivotal moment. The Medizinisch theoretische Institute in Rostock truly began its journey. Johann Wilhelm Josephi a Head of Anatomy gave the first pathology lectures. This was in the Zergliederungshaus at the Old Market. World War II caused significant damage. The Institute of Hygiene was completely destroyed. The war’s impact was devastating. Post-war reconstruction under Alexander Bienengräber modernized the institute.

Each semester 150 medical students receive instruction. Their research focuses on various cancers. Pancreatitis renal and transplant pathology are also studied. The Institute processes a massive workload. Annually they handle nearly 15000 histology cases. They also examine 20000 cytology cases and 150 autopsies. This demonstrates the Institute’s crucial role in medical research and education.
