Beneath the Antalya sun, nestled within the historic Kaleiçi district, lies the Suna & İnan Kıraç Kaleiçi Museum, also known as the Mediterranean Civilizations Museum. This isn’t just another museum. It’s a journey through time, a whispered conversation with the ghosts of civilizations past. The Mediterranean Civilizations Museum breathes life into the stories of Lycia, Pamphylia, and Pisidia, three ancient cultures that once thrived in this very region. The museum’s collection is a testament to their ingenuity, artistry, and enduring legacy. It was established in 1922, initially housed in the Alâeddin Mosque before moving to the Yivli Minare Mosque and finally finding its current home. The museum’s thirteen exhibition halls and open-air gallery sprawl across 7,000 square meters. They hold a treasure trove of artifacts. Some 5,000 pieces are on display, with another 25,000 to 30,000 carefully preserved in storage. Imagine walking through the halls, surrounded by statues of Roman emperors and empresses, their marble faces frozen in expressions of power and authority. These figures, unearthed from the ancient city of Perge, offer a glimpse into the grandeur of the Roman Empire. The museum isn’t limited to grand statues. It showcases intricate mosaics, delicate pottery, and ancient coins, each whispering tales of daily life, trade, and cultural exchange. In the Hall of Small Objects, you’ll find lamps and glass objects from the Roman and Byzantine periods, and a stunning silver tray inlaid with gold, discovered by treasure hunters in Kumluca. The museum also boasts a remarkable collection of sarcophagi, including the Domitias sarcophagus and the Twelve Labours of Hercules. These elaborately carved stone coffins offer a poignant reminder of the beliefs and rituals surrounding death in ancient times. The Mediterranean Civilizations Museum isn’t just a repository of artifacts. It’s a living testament to the rich tapestry of human history, a place where the past comes alive and whispers its secrets to those who listen closely. This museum, recognized with the European Council Special Prize in 1988, invites you to explore the heart of Mediterranean civilizations.
