Originally a place of woods lakes and streams Medina Minnesota was inhabited by the Dakota Indians. The Traverse de Sioux treaty changed everything. Settlers flooded the area. The Indians moved west. The settlers were drawn to the plentiful farming opportunities. In 1855 the first settlers arrived. Three years later it became Hamburg Township. Locals soon changed the name. They chose Medina after the Saudi Arabian city. This was in the news that year. In 1858 residents voted unanimously for the name change. Many early settlers were of German or Irish descent. This created strong community ties. Medina grew. It became a village in 1955. It later became a city in 1974. Today Medina is a thriving suburban city. Its population is over 5500. Locals are proud of Medina’s rural history. It maintains its agricultural lands. It also has natural preservation areas. The Medina of Minnesota is home to Polaris Inc. This is a major automotive manufacturer. Polaris produces all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles. Medina’s story is one of transformation. It went from a quiet rural area to a bustling suburb.
