Journey back to 1965. The Meadows Museum first opened its doors at Southern Methodist University. This “Prado on the Prairie” wasn’t built overnight. It began with Algur H. Meadows, a Dallas businessman. He frequently traveled to Madrid for work in the 1950s. His visits to the Prado Museum sparked a passion for Spanish Golden Age art. By 1962, Meadows had his own collection. This became the foundation of the Meadows Museum. The museum houses an impressive collection of Spanish art. It spans from the 10th to the 21st centuries. You’ll find masterpieces by El Greco, Velázquez, Goya, Miró, and Picasso. The collection includes Renaissance altarpieces and Baroque canvases. It also has Rococo oil sketches, Impressionist landscapes, and modernist abstractions. Even Goya’s graphic works are represented. There are also sculptures by Rodin, Maillol, and Giacometti. The museum isn’t just about the big names. It also holds the University Art Collection. This features works by North Texas artists like Frank Reaugh and Jerry Bywaters. The current building, finished in 2001, is neo-Palladian in style. It boasts naturally lit galleries, perfect for showcasing the art. Even King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofía of Spain attended the dedication ceremony. After Meadows’s death in 1978, the museum continued to grow. The Meadows Foundation has supported its development. Their partnership has led to conservation efforts and new acquisitions. The Meadows Museum isn’t just a static collection. It’s an active part of the community. It offers tours, educational outreach, and family programs. It also hosts special exhibitions, lectures, and concerts. The Meadows Museum is a vibrant cultural hub. It offers a rich journey through Spanish art and history.
