Peeking out from the Hendon campus is MDX House. It stands as a testament to Middlesex University’s long-standing commitment to education. This public research university has a rich history dating back to 1878.

Middlesex University started as St Katharine’s College in Tottenham. It was a teacher training college for women. Over the years, it merged with several other institutions. Middlesex University gained its current form in 1992. It became one of the post-1992 universities.

MDX House is part of a university that boasts a diverse student body. Middlesex University has over 19000 students in London. Globally, it has over 37000. The university has exchange links with over 100 universities. These links span 22 countries across Europe, the United States and the world.

More than 140 nationalities are represented at Middlesex’s Hendon campus alone. The university also has campuses in Dubai and Mauritius. It had one in Malta until 2022. Courses are delivered by three faculties. These are the Faculty of Science and Technology, the Faculty of Professional and Social Sciences and the Faculty of the Arts and Creative Industries.

Middlesex University received a Silver rating in the Government’s Teaching Excellence Framework in 2023. The university has been awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize three times. It has twice received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for its international work.

For 140 years, the institutions that formed Middlesex University have been based in north London. The university grew through mergers. St Katherine’s College was joined by Hornsey College of Art, Ponders End Technical Institute and Hendon Technical Institute.

In 1973, these colleges formed Middlesex Polytechnic. Middlesex University was established in 1992 by royal assent. From the 1990s, the university developed its international presence. It opened its first overseas regional office in Kuala Lumpur. In 1995, a network of regional offices opened across Europe.

In 2005, Middlesex opened its first overseas campus in Dubai. This was followed by campuses in Mauritius in 2009 and Malta in 2013. The university has consolidated its London campuses into one Hendon campus. All its London-based teaching is now accommodated here.

The Hendon campus has seen significant investment. Over 200 million pounds transformed it into one of London’s biggest campuses. The main College Building was refurbished for 40 million pounds. A glass-covered central courtyard was added. This formed Ricketts Quadrangle. In 2004, the Sheppard Library opened. It offers 24/7 access to over 1000 study areas and specialist facilities.

The Ritterman Building is one of Middlesex University’s newest developments. It opened in February 2017. It provides additional teaching space for the Faculty of Science and Technology and the Faculty of Arts and Creative Industries. It is home to the UK’s first Cyber Factory. Its design incorporates sustainable technologies. These include solar panels, a bio-diverse green roof and living walls. They are irrigated by rainwater harvesting.

Other specialist facilities include bioscience and biomedical science laboratories. There are also nursing and midwifery simulation labs. The Hendon campus offers various sports facilities. These include a fitness studio and floodlit outdoor courts.

Middlesex University continues to evolve. It adapts to meet the needs of its students and the wider community. MDX House stands as a symbol of this commitment. It represents a place of learning, innovation and global connection.
