How did a small town in Texas get its name from a railroad foreman? Look around you, we are in McNeil, named after none other than George McNeil himself. He was the section foreman for the Austin and Northwestern Railroad back in the 1880s. McNeil isn’t just about railroads though. The heart of McNeil was the Austin White Lime Company. Imagine, for almost 150 years, from 1888 to 2024, this company quarried limestone and produced lime products. The company was a vital part of McNeil’s identity for generations. Although the Austin White Lime Company closed its doors in 2024, its legacy lives on in the heart of McNeil. Sadly, much of old McNeil has faded. What was once a bustling hub with a hotel and general store now relies on its neighboring town, Austin, for mail service. Today, the name McNeil is mostly associated with the former Austin White Lime Company facility and the railroad junction. Even with the passage of time, McNeil remains a point of interest, a small town with a big history, forever intertwined with the legacy of the railroad and the lime industry.
