“Can you imagine Dallas as a small village?” Methodist preachers once stopped here for worship. That was back in 1846. The story of First United Methodist Church began then. It has grown into the church we see today. This church has a rich history.

First United Methodist Church’s roots go way back. The congregation met in three different locations. These were in the small town of Dallas. In 1916, Trinity Methodist and First Methodist combined. Dallas was growing quickly. The combined congregation benefited from this. There was enough support to build a proper church.

Fundraising was hard because of World War I. But the members were very generous. More than 2,000 people donated. The cornerstone was laid in October 1921. The new church was at Harwood and Ross.

The first service was held on February 7 1926. Back then churches called their worship space a “main auditorium”. But this church called it a “sanctuary”. You can see why when you visit today. It is a beautiful and historic space.

For over 90 years First United Methodist Church has been in downtown Dallas. The church has grown with the city. It has evolved over time. It continues to impact lives. The church’s history and tradition help it move forward.
