Picture this a small town nestled in the heart of Texas. This is McLendon-Chisholm a place where history whispers on the wind. McLendon-Chisholm wasn’t always a town. It started as two separate settlements McLendon and Chisholm. Each was named for a prominent family. P A McLendon a landowner built a store a cotton gin and a blacksmith shop around 1870. This remarkable combination served the community until 1975. A school and a church were built at the same time. A post office opened in 1880 closing in 1905. By 1896 McLendon boasted 150 residents and nine businesses. Throughout the 20th century its population hovered around fifty.
Meanwhile the Chisholm settlement has its own story. Enoch Parson Chisholm a farmer and a Methodist preacher settled there in 1856. He organized the Chisholm Methodist Church in his home in 1871. By 1875 he built a small chapel called Chisholm Chappell. This chapel stood until at least the 1980s. Two small school buildings combined to form the Berry Creek Academy in 1886. In 1898 it was the second largest school in the county with four rooms four teachers and 301 students. A post office opened in 1891 closing in 1905. Chisholm’s first store opened in 1890. The population peaked around 200 in 1940 dropping to 167 by 1968-69.
The two communities remained separate until October 18 1969. That’s when McLendon and Chisholm incorporated as McLendon-Chisholm. This incorporation likely boosted growth due to the overflow from nearby metropolitan areas. The population climbed from 150 in 1972-73 to 480 in the 1980s. By 1990 it reached 646. It continued to grow steadily. By the year 2000 the population had increased to 914. McLendon-Chisholm stands as a testament to the growth and resilience of small-town America. It is a place where history and community intertwine. A place where two settlements became one creating a unique story in the heart of Texas. It is more than just a town it’s a living legacy.
