Let’s take a closer look at McKinley Square. The main entrance greets you with 3-foot historical walls. These walls date back to the 1930s. A fan-shaped arched staircase leads up from 20th and Vermont Streets.
McKinley Square features three Designated Park Areas. These areas cater to different park uses and guidelines. The goal is enjoyment for all visitors.
First, we have the Children’s Playground. It was established in 1999. Potrero Hill families and friends partnered with SF RPD to create it. It’s a safe space for toddlers and children under 9. Adults must be present. Also, alcohol and smoking are prohibited. Dogs aren’t allowed here. Picnic tables and benches are available by reservation for special events.
Next is the Multi-Use Open Space. This turf area includes benches and viewing spots. Like other San Francisco parks, specific guidelines ensure everyone’s safety. Dogs must be leashed in this area. Due to heavy foot traffic, this area requires frequent repairs. In 2013, the area was closed for 60 days for turf restoration. This cost around 300K.
Finally, we arrive at the Multi-Use Open Space. This is the native area with western views. It also serves as an off-leash dog play area. Locals call it the western hillside. The open space is in its original, rustic condition. It features both native and non-native species. Updated walking paths make this area enjoyable for everyone.
The southern Vermont Street entrance offers a unique view. It has a 1930s staircase. This entrance sits beside open space owned by the Department of Public Works. Locals call this area the Enclave. Historically, this area is known as Twisty Hill. The name dates back to 1856.
McKinley Square provides picnic areas for gatherings. You can find three tables at the play area. There are two tables on the turf. You can reserve these picnic areas.
