Gazing across the tranquil expanse of McKenzie Bay, one can almost feel the whispers of time carried on the gentle breeze. McKenzie Bay, nestled on Waiheke Island, offers more than just picturesque views. It embodies the spirit of community and showcases the remarkable transformation of a once ordinary landscape. McKenzie Reserve, bordering McKenzie Bay, stands as a testament to the dedication and vision of the local community. What was once a mundane pine plantation has been reborn as a flourishing coastal broadleaf forest. This remarkable achievement is a result of an inspirational community project. The reserve is an invitation to explore, with interpretive displays scattered throughout, many designed specifically for children. It’s a place where learning and discovery intertwine seamlessly with nature’s beauty. As you ascend the paths within McKenzie Reserve, the reward is breathtaking panoramic views over the Hauraki Gulf. The walk itself might be steep in parts, but the vista from the lookout point makes every step worthwhile. It’s a challenge perfect for families, a shared adventure where the effort is eclipsed by the spectacular scenery. Remember to keep dogs on leads within the reserve. While bikes and buggies aren’t suitable for the terrain, there are public toilets available at nearby Sandy Bay for your convenience. And if you’re planning a picnic, the interpretive ‘hub’ at the center of the reserve is an ideal spot. Remember the pou sculpture at the end of Empire Avenue? That marks your entry point to the reserve. Follow the Te Ara Hura markers and let them guide you on a journey of discovery. Look out for the “lift up” surprises along the route. They add an element of playful intrigue to the experience, revealing hidden wonders amidst the natural beauty. From Enclosure Bay, the path leads you up Empire Avenue and into the heart of McKenzie Reserve. Continue on the yellow route, circling the reserve clockwise, until you reach the lookout site. From there, descend and take a left onto the blue route. This new, easy track will take you to Coromandel Road and the chance to explore another nearby gem, Sandy Bay. Then, simply follow the road back to Enclosure Bay, completing your loop around this captivating corner of Waiheke Island. The walk is classified as moderate, with some steep sections along gravel tracks and roadsides.
