“A playground built on generosity.” That’s the story of McKay-Nealis Park, right here in Des Plaines. This isn’t just any park. It’s a testament to the kindness of two men, John P. McKay and Walter A. Nealis. In 1958, these two local real estate partners didn’t just donate the land for McKay-Nealis Park. They also dipped into their own pockets to buy the very first playground equipment. That original equipment cost $3,039.50, a considerable sum back then. Today, McKay-Nealis Park thrives, thanks to their initial generosity. The park underwent a major renovation, bringing it up to date while honoring its history. Now, it boasts separate play structures for toddlers and older children, each filled with slides, climbers, and all sorts of fun challenges. There’s a large sand play area, perfect for building castles. Benches provide a spot for quiet moments, and a picnic table under a gazebo offers a shady retreat. The engineered wood-fiber surface ensures a safe and cushioned landing for little ones. Open space beckons for frisbee games, kite flying, and simple family fun. McKay-Nealis Park isn’t just a playground. It’s a place where the spirit of community and the echoes of generosity continue to resonate, generation after generation.
