Straddling the Northern Motorway, the McClymonts Road Bridge isn’t just a bridge. It’s a symbol of connection. It links the communities of Pinehill and Albany, allowing people to seamlessly walk, cycle, or drive. The McClymonts Road Bridge provides access to schools, the Albany Station, and the bustling business area. This new McClymonts Road Bridge, a longer and wider structure than its predecessor, opened just last month. It boasts vehicle lanes and an extra-wide, four-meter walking and cycling path on each side. This bridge is more than just a convenient crossing. It is an integral part of the Northern Corridor Improvements project. The new bridge replaced the old McClymonts Road Bridge to allow for motorway widening below. This widening includes extra traffic lanes, the extended Northern Busway, and a new shared path underneath. The old McClymonts Road Bridge is currently being demolished piece by piece. This demolition process is happening overnight to minimize disruption. Large cranes lift 19-meter-long, 50-tonne beams. The beams are cut in half and loaded onto trucks. Crews return during the day to dig out the support walls. This careful dismantling will continue for the next few months. The new McClymonts Road Bridge is not just functional. It’s also artistic. Later this year, artwork will be added to the bridge. It will become one of three illuminated “gateway” structures along the motorway. These illuminated gateways will be a striking feature for those driving towards the city from the north. The McClymonts Road Bridge is a testament to progress and connection in Auckland. It’s a story of community, infrastructure, and art, all woven together into a single structure.
