The Maywood Company organized the platting of streets in 1870. They planted 20,000 trees to enhance the future town. Maywood, Illinois, was founded in 1869. The village was named after Colonel William T. Nichols’s late daughter, May, and the groves of trees that thrived here. Maywood became a hub for the healthcare industry in 1920 when the Edward Hines Jr. Memorial Hospital was established and in 1969 Loyola University Medical Center was added. The village is located on the west bank of the Des Plaines River and is just 11 miles west of downtown Chicago. Maywood’s officials often state that the village welcomed diverse individuals and families at a time when many other suburbs were actively turning them away. Maywood boasts 17 homes and properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This small suburban community has a population of about 23,512 residents. Most of the houses in Maywood are over a century old in relatively unaltered condition. The original homes were designed with different styles like Italianate, Queen Anne, Prairie School, Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, French Eclectic, Craftsman, Art Modern and Mid-Century Modern. The eclecticism in Maywood is a testament to the skill of many accomplished architects. The Des Plaines River flows next to the village. Maywood welcomes you to discover its rich history and remarkable diversity.
