Washington served in World War II. He was in the 1887th Engineer Aviation Battalion. The battalion built a bomber landing strip on Angaur Island in just 20 days.

After the war Washington earned his G.E.D. He then attended Roosevelt University graduating in 1949. He pursued a law degree at Northwestern University. He was the only black student in his class. Washington began his law practice in Chicago in 1952.

Harold Washington entered politics. He served as an assistant city prosecutor in 1954. In 1965 he was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives. He championed legislation promoting equality. He also advocated for Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday to be a holiday.

Washington faced a legal challenge. He was convicted of tax evasion in 1972 and spent 36 days in jail. Despite this setback he continued his political career. He became an Illinois State Senator in 1977. Later he served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1981 to 1983.

In 1983 Harold Washington made history. He was elected Chicago’s first African American mayor. He won re-election in 1987. During his tenure Washington brought significant changes to the city. He created the Ethics Commission. He increased representation of underrepresented groups in city government and contracts.

Washington opened government with a Freedom of Information executive order. He led the fight for ward redistricting. This ensured more black and Hispanic representation. He opened the city’s budget process for public input. He balanced economic development between neighborhoods and downtown.

Mayor Washington supported neighborhood festivals and projects. He created a citywide cultural plan. He guided the effort to build a new central library. This helped revitalize the South Loop. He also led the movement for Illinois’ Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday bill.

Harold Washington tragically died in office on November 25 1987. He is buried in Oak Woods Cemetery in Chicago. Despite facing opposition within the Chicago City Council he balanced the city’s budget. He improved the city’s credit rating. He remained committed to programs benefiting minority communities.
