“Transformed by the journey” is more than just a saying. It’s the story of Mayflower Church. This Minneapolis church spent years exploring its connection to the famous ship.

Mayflower Church has stood here for over a century. People have celebrated births and weddings within its walls. It has been a place for PFLAG groups and addiction recovery meetings. For many kids, it’s synonymous with lock-ins and impactful service trips. Mayflower has even gained recognition as a justice church.

But the name “Mayflower” carries a complex history. It’s linked to colonization and oppression. The church recognized this and started a journey of reckoning.

Kate Andrews van Horne led the “What’s in a Name” committee. The committee facilitated discussions about a possible name change. They wanted a name that better reflected the church’s mission. The goal was to create a welcoming congregation. They wanted to embody radical hospitality. They are walking the Jesus path of love, kindness, and justice. The committee considered how the church is perceived.

Initially, the list had 100 names. It was eventually narrowed down to ten. Creekside emerged as the clear favorite. The congregation voted and 85% approved the change. Even those initially opposed came to accept the community’s decision.

The name change wouldn’t make people leave Mayflower Church. Instead, the congregation thrived. Sunday worship attendance grew and new membership classes were robust.

Changing the name was a big process. The church needed to let go of the old name. They had to embrace the new one. The new name is Creekside United Church of Christ.

“Creekside” highlights the church’s connection to nature. Minnehaha Creek flows nearby and pours into the Mississippi River. This signifies a deeper connection to the land. It also represents leaving behind the legacy of New England.

In 2025, Mayflower Church will celebrate its 100-year anniversary. It will be under its new name. They are seeking to live into for the next hundred years.

The journey has transformed Mayflower Church. The church hopes its story inspires other churches with similar names. They hope this will lead to reflection and change.

Mayflower Church’s story is a testament to growth. It shows the power of community and the importance of justice. This church is ready to embrace its future. It’s ready to welcome all.
