Mayfield Baptist Church

“Ever heard of a church that started in an elementary school?” Mayfield Baptist Church didn’t begin in a grand building. It started small in 1972. Seventy-three people gathered at Amos Elementary School for Sunday school. Reverend Bill Hamilton led the congregation. They soon began construction on their own building at 1701 E. Mayfield Road. Their first service in the new building was on June 10 1973. The church continued to grow. They outgrew their initial building. A “Together We Build” campaign funded a new educational building completed in 1977. The congregation’s needs continued to grow. A larger auditorium was constructed. This new 500-seat auditorium opened in 1981. Mayfield Road Baptist Church became Mayfield Road Baptist Church officially in 1974. This happened after a successful year of self-support. The church adopted a constitution and bylaws. This marked the end of its mission status. The church saw many pastors come and go. Reverend Slack served for a time. Dr Nelson served as an interim pastor multiple times. Dr Maddox served briefly before leaving for a position in Washington D.C. Reverend Ashby and Reverend Reynolds also served. Dr Baldwin served for five years. Mr Stewart served for four years. Finally Bobby Bridges became the pastor in 1999. That same year Mayfield Road Baptist Church celebrated 25 years as a church. The church saw road construction work happen nearby. It also underwent sanctuary remodeling in 1997. Mayfield Baptist Church. A story of growth faith and community in Dallas.
