A 7-Tesla scanner one of the first globally. This marvel of neuroscience resides within these walls. Welcome to the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig.

This isn’t just any research facility. It’s a culmination of history and groundbreaking science. Established in 1995 as the Max Planck Institute for Neuropsychological Research it expanded significantly in 2003. A merger with the Munich-based Max Planck Institute for Psychological Research created the institute we see today. This fusion recognized the growing interconnectedness of psychological and neuroscientific research worldwide. The Max Planck Society envisioned a building reflecting this innovative spirit.

The institute’s location wasn’t arbitrary. Leipzig was chosen for its legacy. It’s considered the birthplace of experimental psychology. The Weber brothers pioneers in physics and medicine laid the groundwork in the mid-19th century. Wilhelm Wundt later established the world’s first psychology institute here. This rich history provides a fertile ground for the institute’s continued advancements.

The building itself is a testament to thoughtful design. Constructed between 1996 and 1999 on the edge of Leipzig’s graphic district it sits on land once part of St John’s Cemetery. This unique location offers a blend of urban proximity and spaciousness perfect for the institute’s ambitious projects. The original complex along Stephanstrasse features separate areas for MRI research. An extension along Goldschmidtstrasse added in 2008 reflects the growth and expansion of the institute’s research.

The Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences is internationally renowned. Researchers delve into the fundamental mechanisms of human thought. They explore higher brain functions such as language memory orientation music and communication. Brain plasticity and its influence on cognitive abilities are also extensively studied. The investigation also includes the neural and hormonal foundations of lifestyle diseases such as high blood pressure and obesity. Cutting-edge technology helps this pursuit. In 2007 a 7-Tesla scanner a global rarity was installed offering unprecedented field strength. In 2016 the Connectom a super brain scanner joined the institute. It is one of the best in the world for mapping the brain’s internal wiring unique on the European mainland.

Today the institute comprises four departments and several independent research groups. Researchers from various fields like physics philosophy biology linguistics psychology mathematics computer science and medicine collaborate. This interdisciplinary approach is vital. Experimental researchers depend on accurate data analysis. Analyzing imaging signals with complex computational models is a fundamental part of daily work. The institute boasts its own library holding over 16000 resources and 325 specialized journals.

The Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences isn’t isolated within its walls. Researchers actively engage with the public. They participate in the annual Girls’ & Boys’ Day the Long Night of Sciences and many other events. The institute maintains a school portal and social media presence fostering communication and outreach. So you see this isn’t just a building. It’s a vibrant hub of discovery pushing the boundaries of our understanding of the human brain and cognitive processes. A true testament to scientific excellence in Leipzig.
