What a sight to behold! This is the Max Palevsky Residential Commons East. Many people just call it Max P or simply Max. It’s a vibrant hub of student life here at the University of Chicago. Constructed in 2001, the Max Palevsky Residential Commons East, along with its two companion buildings, Max Palevsky Central and Max Palevsky West, make up a striking complex designed by the renowned Mexican architect, Ricardo Legorreta. The Max Palevsky Residential Commons East is home to three of the eight houses that make up the larger Max Palevsky Residential Commons, namely Alper, Hoover, and May Houses. You’ll notice the distinctive and colorful brickwork, a hallmark of Legorreta’s style. The Max Palevsky Residential Commons East isn’t just a pretty face though. The building is designed to foster a strong sense of community with shared common areas, student lounges, and even community kitchens where you might find students up late whipping up a midnight snack. The name, you ask? Well, it honors Max Palevsky, a University of Chicago alumnus and tech pioneer, who donated generously to enhance student life here on campus.
