Remember Sultan Mehmed III who ordered the execution of his nineteen brothers? Here stands his mausoleum. It serves as a stark reminder of a dark chapter in Ottoman history. The Mausoleum of Sultan III. Mehmed is located near the Hagia Sophia. Many tourists visit the Hagia Sophia but are unaware of the Sultan Mausoleums.

The Mausoleum of Sultan III. Mehmed was designed by Dalgıç Ahmed Ağa. He was the court architect in 1608. Sultan Ahmed I paid for all construction expenses.

Notice the octagonal plan and the two domes. The facade is coated in marble. Flowers, landscapes, and stars decorate the entrance. This style goes beyond usual decorations.

Look at the windows that are laid out in three rows. The 17th-century white and blue tiles decorate horizontally above the lowest row. Hand-drawn ornaments decorate the remaining parts.

New sections were added for the daughters of the sultans. These are on either side of the entrance gate. Inscriptions about history are on the side facing Bab-i Humayun Street.

The Mausoleum of Sultan III. Mehmed shelters 26 sarcophagi. These include Sultan Ahmed I’s mother, Handan Sultan. Also, sons and daughters of Sultan Ahmed I rest here. A daughter of Murat III and other sultans’ sons are also interred here.

Sultan Mehmed III ruled until 1603. He governed the empire personally. He wasn’t much influenced by the harem or advisors. Mehmed III expanded the empire fighting against the Habsburgs and Persia.

Mehmed III died at the young age of 37. A dervish foretold his death 55 days prior. The sultan became obsessed and died. His 13-year-old son, Ahmed, inherited the empire. Ahmed refrained from killing his siblings. His only brother, Mustafa, was considered a madman.

The tombs provide insights into Ottoman burial traditions. They show the empire’s artistic achievements. The Mausoleum of Sultan III. Mehmed is a testament to a complex past. The mausoleums stand as a reminder of power. They remind us of family, ambition, and the fleeting nature of life.
