Intriguing aren’t they? These are the Mausolées romains of Lyon. Before you stand five remarkably preserved Gallo-Roman tombs. They’re not just stones. They’re silent storytellers. They whisper tales of a bustling Roman city Lugdunum.

These aren’t just any tombs. They belonged to some of Lugdunum’s most important citizens. Think of them as the VIP section of the ancient necropolis. Roman customs strictly forbade burials within city limits. Therefore these impressive monuments lined the roads leading to and from the city. Everyone who entered or left Lugdunum saw these imposing structures.

The Mausolées romains you see today are actually reconstructions. In 1885 ten such mausoleums were unearthed during railway construction. Five were carefully dismantled and reassembled here in Place Eugène-Wernert. The others sadly were lost to time. These remaining tombs were declared historical monuments in 1905. They are a testament to the enduring effort to preserve history.

The best-preserved tomb belongs to Quintus Calvius Turpio. He was a significant figure. He was a member of the Augustales Seviri. This was a priestly college devoted to the worship of Rome and Augustus. For a freedman this represented the pinnacle of social mobility. It shows the extraordinary influence and wealth Turpio achieved.

Notice the architecture. They’re predominantly square-based. They’re built of a soft high-quality limestone. The stone dates back to the 1st century AD. The intricate friezes and carvings are stunning. They showcase ornate discs and even a bull’s head. On the west side three tombs are specifically named. One honors Julia. Another is attributed to Quintus Valerius. A third belongs to Julius Severianus. Each name hints at a unique story. A story waiting to be uncovered.

The inscriptions on some of the tombs provide further clues to the identities of those interred. These inscriptions reveal familial connections and social standings. They let us connect with people who lived nearly two thousand years ago.

These Mausolées romains aren’t just ancient graves. They are a window into the daily lives of the Gallo-Romans. They showcase their beliefs and their societal structure. They are a powerful and poignant reminder that life goes on. Even after millennia these stones continue to stand as monuments. They stand as silent witnesses to the enduring legacy of Lyon’s Roman past.
