Was it truly inevitable that this airport would bear the name Maurice Bishop International Airport? Here we stand at this vital gateway. It connects Grenada to the world. This airport wasn’t always called Maurice Bishop International Airport. It was once known as Point Salines International Airport. The change came in 2009 honoring the late Prime Minister Maurice Bishop.

Maurice Bishop championed this airport’s construction in 1979. He envisioned it as Grenada’s link to global tourism. The existing Pearls Airport had a short runway. It made it difficult for large jets to land. Tourists faced delays and extra expenses. They had to transfer to smaller regional planes. Bishop aimed to change that. He wanted direct flights from Europe and North America.

Interestingly, the airport’s construction sparked controversy. US President Ronald Reagan claimed it would serve as a Soviet military waypoint to Cuba. He highlighted the involvement of Cuban workers. Bishop countered that the airport was for tourism. He said that it was designed by a Canadian firm. He also stated that specialized contracts were awarded to European contractors. American firms also participated in the project.

The unfinished airport became a focal point in October 1983. A coup led to Maurice Bishop’s death. This event triggered the US-led invasion of Grenada. The US cited the safety of American medical students at St. George’s University as justification. The university was located near the airport.

On October 25 1983 US Army Rangers conducted a low-altitude parachute assault. They faced resistance from Grenadian forces and armed Cuban construction workers. The Rangers secured the airfield. This allowed US Air Force C-141s to land. They brought in paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division.

After the invasion, the airport was completed with US assistance. The first commercial passenger plane landed on October 28 1984. Today Maurice Bishop International Airport stands as a testament to Grenada’s resilience. It is more than just a point of arrival or departure. It is a symbol of Grenada’s complex history.

Located on Point Salines, the airport sits about 5 miles south of St. George’s. Its runway measures 2744 meters long. The airport also houses the Grenada Outstation of the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority.

Consider the many airlines that pass through here. They connect Grenada to various parts of the world. From its controversial beginnings to its present-day role, Maurice Bishop International Airport embodies Grenada’s journey. It is a place where history, politics, and progress converge.
