Thirty-one meters above the city sprawls Mátyáshegy. Its slopes once echoed with the clang of mining picks. This wasn’t just any hill. Mátyáshegy held secrets within its rocky heart. Secrets revealed only to those who ventured into its depths.

Mátyáshegy a significant part of Budapest’s history is located in the Buda Hills specifically within the Hármashatár-hegy massif. This relatively low hill boasts steep slopes. It’s largely undeveloped even today despite the surrounding development. Its unique geological composition makes it a place of wonder. Its foundation is a mix of Triassic-era dolomite and hornstone. Layers of nummulitic limestone rich in fossils rest upon this base. These valuable building materials were actively mined leaving behind large quarry yards still visible today.

The hill is dotted with numerous caves. The Mátyáshegy Cave system is a marvel. It’s a massive network of passageways. Its five-kilometer length with a 100-meter vertical drop is impressive. Today however access is highly restricted. Guided tours happen rarely. The cave holds minerals formed within the limestone and marl’s cracks. Calcite is abundant. Traces of iron and manganese oxides barite gypsum and quartz also appear. Due to the cave’s protected status mineral collecting is strictly forbidden.

Mátyáshegy’s strategic position offered breathtaking views. Its southern and western sides overlook the beautiful Szép-völgy valley. Its northern and eastern slopes descend towards the heart of Óbuda. To its northwest rises Remete-hegy at 351 meters.

You can access Mátyáshegy by bus 65 or 165. A brisk walk from Szépvölgyi út or Kiscelli street will bring you to its base.

Mátyáshegy more than just a hill. It’s a living testament to Budapest’s geological and mining past. Its hidden caves its steep slopes and its stunning views. This is Mátyáshegy a place where history geology and nature intertwine. A true hidden gem of Budapest.
