Did you know that Mályásföld’s name isn’t linked to King Matthias’ hunting grounds? That’s a common misconception. The truth is far more interesting.

Mályásföld a charming district of Budapest boasts a unique history. It wasn’t always part of the bustling city. It began as a collection of summer homes in the late 1800s. Wealthy families sought refuge from the summer heat. They established a community built on elegance and tranquility.

The arrival of the HÉV line in 1888 marked a turning point. This new connection to the city center made Mályásföld easily accessible. The Union of Mályásföld Summerhouse Owners was formed. Strict rules governed the area. Poultry and other farm animals were banned. The goal was to maintain a pristine environment. A peaceful escape from the city’s hustle and bustle.

Mályásföld wasn’t just a haven for relaxation. It played a crucial role in Hungarian aviation history. Mályásföld Airport the nation’s first international airport opened in 1916. The first flight between Budapest and Vienna took place two years later. The airport wasn’t the only thing that made Mályásföld important. A factory building small military planes under a Fokker license was also located there.

After World War I Mályásföld Airport became a secret military base. Civil and sport aviation moved to Budaörs and later to Ferihegy. The airport’s strategic location didn’t go unnoticed. The Soviet occupation after World War II transformed Mályásföld into “Little Moscow” for a time.

The Soviets weren’t just interested in the airport. They repurposed many of Mályásföld’s elegant villas. They used these buildings for their own purposes. The construction of military buildings around Erzsébetliget resulted in the relocation of a small Lutheran church. The church was moved piece by piece. Its beautiful wooden ceiling was preserved.

Today Mályásföld retains its unique charm. The villas still stand as testaments to its elegant past. The district’s rich history is woven into its very fabric. It’s a place where history and modernity coexist harmoniously. A vibrant community thrives within its borders. It serves as a reminder of Budapest’s multifaceted past. Its role in aviation and its transformation under Soviet rule. A neighborhood that deserves a closer look.
