Doesn’t this Matthäikirchdenkmal seem unassuming at first glance? Yet, beneath its simple appearance lies a tale of transformation, destruction, and remembrance. This stele marks the spot of the former Matthäikirche.

Once, a church stood here. It wasn’t always called Matthäikirche. Its story began in the 13th century as a Franciscan monastery church. Known as Barfüßerkirche and Heiliggeistkirche. In 1488, the building was significantly expanded into a two-aisled hall church. The church was expanded with stellar vaults and completed in 1494.

After the Reformation, the church became a warehouse in 1552. Imagine merchants storing their goods where prayers once echoed. The building was rededicated in 1699 as Neukirche.

Johann Sebastian Bach himself oversaw music here when he was Thomaskantor. The church served as a prison for war prisoners. It later became a military hospital during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1876, a new congregation formed and the church was named Matthäikirche.

Tragedy struck during a bombing in 1943. The Matthäikirche was destroyed. Only ruins remained. A final service was held in 1948 before the remains were cleared.

For years, the site was occupied by the Ministry for State Security of the GDR. It wasn’t until 1998 that this memorial was erected. Created by Matthias Klemm, it serves as a reminder of what once stood here. The Matthäikirchdenkmal stands as a testament to Leipzig’s layered past. The stele with its aluminium band tells the story. It reminds us of the church’s various names and uses. It speaks of destruction and loss. It also speaks of remembrance. Take a moment to reflect on the history beneath your feet.
