Did you ever hear of a church born out of necessity? Here at Matthäuskirche, that’s precisely the story. The Matthäuskirche stands before us, a testament to resilience and community spirit in post-World War I Germany. Karlsruhe’s Südweststadt needed a church, but inflation made a grand structure impossible. The original plan for a church at Kolpingplatz had to be abandoned. So, in 1926, the congregation decided to erect a “Notkirche,” an emergency church, on land donated by a parishioner. The inscription above the entrance, “Aus der Not geboren, zum Trost erkoren” (“Born of necessity, chosen for comfort”), reflects this humble beginning. The Matthäuskirche was consecrated in 1927, a beacon of hope during a turbulent time. It became Karlsruhe’s only Protestant church built during the Weimar Republic. The architects, Hermann Reinhard Alker and a congregational member named Hermann Zelt, employed ingenious cost-saving methods. They combined industrial and agricultural building techniques, using a lightweight timber frame structure. Artists like Emil Sutor and August Babberger lent their talents, creating a harmonious blend of art and architecture. Sutor crafted the crucifix in the choir and the angels in the vestibule. Babberger contributed an expressive painting of the parable of the ten virgins, though it sparked some debate within the congregation. The interior, with its red brick floor tiles, gray-blue walls, and brown-red ceiling, originally created a calming atmosphere. The church has seen changes over the years. Renovations in 1972 and again in 2008 altered the interior. Sadly, Babberger’s altar painting was lost, a casualty of war damage and subsequent water damage. It was painted over in 1972. Even with these changes, the Matthäuskirche continues to serve the community. It stands as a powerful symbol of faith and resourcefulness, a reminder that even in times of hardship, beauty and community can flourish.
