Does this park look familiar? Mather Park, despite its recreational abundance today, was once a mere eight-acre plot known as Peterson Park. Its story intertwines with the booming population of Chicago’s West Ridge neighborhood in the post-World War I era. The area needed a recreational hub, and the Chicago Park District answered the call. They purchased the land for Mather Park in 1948. However, it wasn’t until 1959 that Mather Park opened its gates, coinciding with the adjacent Mather High School’s construction. Both sites pay homage to Stephen Tyng Mather, the first Director of the National Park Service. An interesting fact: Mather, although known for his contributions to national parks, was a Chicago industrialist who championed Midwestern landscape preservation. Today, Mather Park sprawls across almost 15 acres, shared with Mather High School. It boasts a collection of sports fields, tennis courts, even horseshoe pits. The high school also adds to the park’s offerings with its indoor spaces like a natatorium and gymnasiums. Mather Park is a testament to Chicago’s dedication to green spaces and the legacy of a man who valued the preservation of our nation’s natural beauty.
