What if walls could talk? The Mastio della Cittadella, standing before us, could tell a tale or two. This imposing structure, the only remaining piece of the once mighty Cittadella, whispers of a time when Torino was transforming from a medieval town into a modern capital. Emanuele Filiberto, Duke of Savoy, envisioned a grand fortress to protect his newly chosen capital. Thus, in 1564, the Mastio della Cittadella, part of a massive pentagonal citadel, was born. This citadel wasn’t just for show; it was a sophisticated defense mechanism, even boasting a double-ramp well for a constant water supply during sieges. Its presence shaped the city’s growth for centuries. Imagine, for a moment, the bustle of activity within these walls. Soldiers marched, cannons roared, and the fate of Torino hung in the balance. The Mastio della Cittadella itself was a key player in the War of the Spanish Succession, withstanding sieges and witnessing acts of incredible bravery. In the 19th century, as military tactics evolved, the once-essential Cittadella was deemed obsolete and largely demolished. Yet, the Mastio remained, a steadfast sentinel overlooking Turin’s transformation. Today, this survivor houses the National Museum of Artillery, its walls echoing with the stories of battles fought and won. The Mastio della Cittadella is a testament to Turin’s enduring spirit, a tangible reminder of the city’s rich past.
