Imagine stepping into a world where artistic dialogue thrives. That world is Massimo De Carlo London. Founded in 1987 in Milan, the gallery expanded to London in 2009. Initially named Carlson Gallery, Massimo De Carlo London found its home on South Audley Street in Mayfair in 2012.
Massimo De Carlo gallery has played a vital role in establishing a dialogue between artists and institutions for over 30 years. The artists represented on MDC’s roster have all gained international acclaim and recognition. Their works are widely collected in public and private collections.
But there is also a more modern location. Since 2022, Massimo De Carlo London is located at 16 Clifford Street. The gallery resides on the first floor of a Grade II Listed building dating back to 1723. This building has historical and cultural significance. Before Massimo De Carlo moved in, the space housed a prestigious leather craft laboratory and store for decades.
PiM Studio Architects designed the new London exhibition venue. Their design aimed to create an alternative exhibition model for the contemporary art system. The architects restored the original interior features of the building. They uncovered and restored the original wooden floor. The pale green hues on the walls and ceilings were also lovingly restored. Bespoke chandeliers from Italy were added alongside a new lighting system.
Massimo De Carlo London has showcased many exhibitions over the years. “Let’s Kill Nicole” by Jamian Juliano-Villani ran from June to September 2019. John Armleder’s “RCHX” was on display in 2017. Also in 2017, Paola Pivi presented “You don’t have to believe me”. “For Now Grey Paintings from 1973/2009” by Günther Förg was exhibited. Jennifer Guidi’s “Radiant” was shown in 2016. Matthew Monahan’s “Shut-ins and Shootouts” and Nate Lowman’s “Downtown Is A Construct” were also exhibited. Rob Pruitt’s “Therapy Paintings” was displayed in 2015.
Massimo De Carlo is not just in London. You can also find galleries in Milan, Hong Kong, Paris, and Beijing. Massimo De Carlo created Virtual Space in April 2020. It is a flexible and immersive art world experience. In 2021, Massimo De Carlo inaugurated a new space in Paris. It is called MASSIMODECARLO Pièce Unique. It offers a program of single works visible day and night through a street window.
In July 2023, Massimo De Carlo announced a new Foundation for Contemporary Art in Belveglio. This will be the first private center dedicated to contemporary art in the province of Asti. The laying of the first stone is scheduled for 2024.
