“A mosque older than time itself,” the old fisherman chuckled, pointing a gnarled finger towards the Masjidhul Jalaaluhdheen. “Well, not quite,” he winked, “but close enough.” The Masjidhul Jalaaluhdheen, he told us, whispers tales from centuries past. An inscription on its Qibla side claims the mosque was built by Sultan Jalaluddin Umar, the mighty King Umar Veeru who ruled from 1306 to 1341 CE. This makes the mosque over 700 years old, a venerable elder in the grand scheme of things. This inscription, etched into a stone imported all the way from Khambhat in India, is the oldest artifact linked to the mosque. It’s possible an even earlier mosque stood here before King Umar Veeru left his mark. The mosque, however, wasn’t frozen in time with King Umar Veeru. Inscriptions on the mosque’s sturdy wooden beams speak of another ruler, Sultan Muhammad Siri Kularanmani Maha Radhun, also known as Dhevvadhoo Rasgefaanu. He undertook the massive task of rebuilding the Masjidhul Jalaaluhdheen 350 years after King Umar Veeru’s reign. Even centuries later, the mosque underwent further renovations during the rule of Sultan Muhammad Shamsuddin III, finally concluding in 1919 CE. The Masjidhul Jalaaluhdheen, despite its many renovations, remains a whisper from the past. It stands as a testament to the enduring faith and architectural prowess of the Maldivian people.
