The mosque’s origins lie with Tjia Kang Hoo. He was a Chinese man who lived in Pekayon. He married a Betawi woman. Over time he embraced Islam changing his name to Abdul Soleh. He even went on the Hajj pilgrimage. He was a respected figure. He actively participated in religious and community life. He’s even said to have built the road in front of the mosque. That’s why it’s called Jalan Haji Abdul Soleh.
After his death his family decided to honor his memory. They transformed his house into a mosque. The mosque’s design reflects this family’s unique heritage. It’s a visible symbol of their journey. They wanted to honor their Chinese ancestry. This is why the mosque incorporates elements reminiscent of a temple. The family’s deep connection to both their Islamic faith and Chinese heritage is undeniable. Even today some family members practice Confucianism and celebrate Lunar New Year. Yet they maintain strong ties with their Muslim relatives.
The mosque’s architecture is stunning. It features a pagoda-style roof. Round windows and doors are other interesting features. These are common in traditional Chinese architecture. Elements of Betawi style are also present. You’ll notice the gigi balang ornamentation along the roofline. Inside you’ll find Islamic elements. Brass Asmaul Husna adorn the prayer hall. The names of Allah and Muhammad are inscribed on the ventilation glass. The entrance to the prayer hall is even marked with the names of the grandfather and grandmother. They’re written in Mandarin Arabic and Indonesian scripts.
