High atop Clementi Hill stands Masjid Tentera Diraja a testament to faith and history. Its gleaming gold dome catches the sunlight. This isn’t just any mosque. This is the Royal Army Mosque a place steeped in stories of devotion and service.

Masjid Tentera Diraja was built in 1961 by Muslim soldiers who served in the British Army after World War II. They built it on Clementi Hill. They named it Tentera Diraja which means Royal Army in Malay. Many mistakenly believe it’s owned by the Malaysian government. This is a common misconception due to its name.

The mosque’s opening was a grand affair. Yang di-Pertuan Negara Yusof Ishak officially opened it on March 30 1962. A Guard of Honor made up of Muslim servicemen was present. It was a truly momentous occasion. A unique honor for this unique mosque.

After the British Army withdrew from Singapore in the late 1960s the mosque came under the Singapore Government’s management. It was rebuilt to its current state. President Yusof Ishak officiated the re-opening. A full circle moment for this important place.

Today Masjid Tentera Diraja is managed by the Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura. It stands as a symbol of resilience. It offers a unique program called “Mudik ke Hulu”. This program helps ex-offenders reintegrate into society. The program includes classes and skill-building workshops. Regardless of age or gender the program offers a helping hand.
