Have you ever seen a mosque without a dome? Welcome to Masjid Sunda Kelapa in Jakarta. This isn’t your typical mosque. It stands proudly on Jalan Taman Sunda Kelapa a testament to unique architectural choices.

Masjid Sunda Kelapa was inaugurated in 1970. It’s named after the historic Sunda Kelapa port. This port played a key role in the spread of Islam. The mosque’s design is a departure from traditional Middle Eastern styles. Architect Ir Gustaf Abbas envisioned a modern and practical structure. The flat concrete roof is striking. It’s a conscious decision to move away from typical mosque designs.

The mosque’s minaret is shaped like a boat. This symbolizes Sunda Kelapa’s history as a vital trading hub. Imagine the bustling activity. Muslim traders came and went spreading their faith. The beautiful main gate features intricate Arabic calligraphy. This gold lettering against white is stunning. Inside more beautiful Arabic calligraphy decorates the walls. The mihrab where the imam leads prayers is elegantly adorned. Rows of Qurans stand neatly around the prayer hall.

Since its completion the interior and exterior have remained unchanged. The mosque has expanded to provide additional facilities. New restrooms were added for both men and women. These weren’t present in the original structure. Now the mosque boasts ample parking. It comfortably fits 500 cars and 600 motorcycles. There are 72 wudu taps and 30 toilets. Modern conveniences like air conditioning and a large screen displaying Friday sermons are also available. A shoe storage area accommodates 300 pairs of shoes.

Remarkably this impressive place of worship has always relied on donations. It has received no funding from the Jakarta Provincial Government. The community has rallied together to maintain and improve its facilities. It stands as a symbol of self-reliance and community spirit. Masjid Sunda Kelapa is more than just a building. It’s a living piece of Jakarta’s history a vibrant hub of faith and community.
