During the Isra and Mi’raj, Prophet Muhammad journeyed to this tree. He was in the company of Archangel Gabriel. Gabriel stopped at the tree but Muhammad continued beyond. It was there that God instructed Muhammad about the daily prayers.
The Quran mentions the Sidrat al-Muntaha in several suras. These verses highlight its significance. They speak of its heavenly splendor. They also speak of its place near the Garden of Eternal Residence.
Islamic scholars offer interpretations of its meaning. Abdul-Rahman al-Sa’di says it is beyond the seventh heaven. He explains that everything from Earth ascends to it. Everything from Heaven descends to it. This includes divine inspiration.
Abdullah Yusuf Ali describes it as marking the bounds of heavenly knowledge. He says that neither angels nor men can pass beyond it.

The physical form of the Sidratul Muntaha is described as beautiful. Its roots have four rivers. Two are hidden in paradise. Two are visible as the Nile and Euphrates. Its shade is so vast. A rider would take 100 years to cross it.
Prophet Muhammad said its light and colors are beyond human description. Its beauty cannot be captured in words. Angels use its leaves to remember Allah. Even Gabriel cannot enter it. Only Muhammad was allowed to approach it.
