The Grand Mosque of Baiturrahman’s origins are traced back to 1612. Some say it was built in 1292 by Sultan Alaidin Mahmudsyah. The original mosque featured a multi-tiered thatched roof. This was typical of Acehnese architecture.
In 1873 the Dutch attacked the Kraton. Acehnese fighters used the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque for defense. The mosque caught fire from flares. General van Swieten promised to rebuild it. He wanted to create a place of mercy.
The Dutch rebuilt the Baiturrahman Mosque in 1879. This was meant to appease the Acehnese. Tengku Qadhi Malikul Adil laid the first stone. He became the mosque’s first imam. Construction finished in 1881.
Initially many Acehnese refused to pray there. It was built by the Dutch. Today it is a source of pride for Banda Aceh.
The mosque initially had one dome and one minaret. More were added later in 1935, 1958, and 1982. Now there are seven domes and eight minarets. These symbolize the seven verses and four pillars of Islam. During the 2004 tsunami, it was one of the few buildings left standing.
