Thirty-five determined individuals. That’s how Masjid Raya Al-Ikhlas began. In 1967 a group of community leaders from several Cipete neighborhoods united. They shared a dream to build a mosque. This wasn’t just any mosque. They envisioned Masjid Raya Al-Ikhlas as a center for Islamic preaching and community.
The Masjid Raya Al-Ikhlas journey started humbly. It began with door-to-door efforts. People tirelessly sought donations. Their dedication resonated with the Cipete community. Support poured in. The initial idea for Musholla Al Ihklas even emerged during Ramadan prayers. These were held from house to house.
Nine years later in 1976 the construction of Masjid Raya Al-Ikhlas finally began. This project continued until 1979. Generous donations from philanthropists and congregants made this possible. Buya H. Amirudin Siregar played a crucial role. He led the YMAI (Yayasan Masjid Al Ikhlas) from 1975 to 1987. His leadership was vital to the mosque’s completion.
Masjid Raya Al-Ikhlas stands proudly in Cipete. The building’s size is impressive. It covers 4500 square meters. The mosque has two floors. It can hold up to 1500 worshippers. The ground floor serves as a community hall. It’s used for various programs. The main prayer hall is on the second floor. Additional spacious areas on the south and east sides further enhance the mosque’s grandeur. These areas also serve as community centers.
The YMAI’s impact extends beyond the Masjid Raya Al-Ikhlas. A school complex is adjacent to the mosque. This includes a kindergarten and primary and secondary schools. The YMAI’s dedication serves its community in multiple ways. A cooperative called Kopsyahira also operates on site. It provides daily necessities and school supplies.
The founders of the YMAI are remembered. Their names are recorded in the founding documents. Their collective vision transformed a simple dream into the vibrant center that is Masjid Raya Al-Ikhlas. This magnificent mosque is more than a place of worship. It serves as a hub for the community’s social and educational needs. Its story highlights the power of collective effort and community spirit. Today Masjid Raya Al-Ikhlas stands as a testament to faith perseverance and community unity.
