Beneath a cluster of five grand domes lies a story of faith. This is the Masjid Raya Al-A’zhom in Tangerang Indonesia. It is Banten province’s largest mosque. It can host around 15000 worshippers.
Opened in 2003 the Masjid Raya Al-A’zhom is relatively new. However its design reflects centuries of Islamic architectural tradition. The idea of building the mosque started in 1997. Djakaria Machmud the Mayor of Tangerang started this project.
The Masjid Raya Al-A’zhom is unique because of its five domes. The main dome is supported by four semi-circular domes. This design removes the need for supporting pillars. This creates a vast open prayer space. The five domes represent the five pillars of Islam. They also symbolize the five daily prayers.
Look closely at the four towers standing tall. They represent four pillars of knowledge: Arabic language, Sharia law, history and philosophy. The number four also signifies the four conditions for a happy life. These are faith, character, law and worship.
The minaret design was inspired by the Sultan Salahuddin Aziz Shah Mosque in Kuala Lumpur. Its rocket-shaped tip came from the Hagia Sophia Mosque in Istanbul Turkey.
Inside the Masjid Raya Al-A’zhom you will notice two distinct areas. The first surrounds the main area. It has pillars that support the tribune. The second is right under the dome. This area feels spacious because there are no pillars.
If you look up you’ll see the dome’s interior. It features verses from the Quran. These are written in a light brown color. This color blends well with the white granite floor. The granite was brought in all the way from China. This creates a serene yet bright environment.
The Al-A’zhom Grand Mosque’s architecture uses 18th and 19th-century styles. However its construction uses modern methods. Instead of carving the decorations they are molded.
Even the ornaments in the mihrab are made using chemical processes. This process etches geometric patterns into the brass.
Outside are plazas gardens and parking. Palm and date trees add a Middle Eastern touch.
The name Al-A’zhom comes from one of Allah’s names. It means “The Greatest” or “The Most Magnificent”. This name signifies that Tangerang has a magnificent mosque with a huge dome and tall minarets.
The Masjid Raya Al-A’zhom isn’t just a place of worship. It is a community hub. It hosts weekly lectures. These cover various topics. The mosque also has a gallery. It serves as a center for Islamic learning and reading. There are recitations for the deaf.
