Whispers of devotion drift through the trees, carrying the name Masjid Pertempatan Melayu Sembawang. This mosque isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to a community’s spirit. Masjid Pertempatan Melayu Sembawang stands before you, a hidden gem tucked away from the main road, a survivor of a bygone era. Built in 1963, its yellow and green minaret reaches towards the sky, crowned with the symbolic crescent moon and star. This mosque has witnessed the transformation of Sembawang. It has outlived the very kampung it was built to serve. The mosque’s name, Masjid Pertempatan Melayu Sembawang, directly translates to “Mosque of the Sembawang Malay Settlement”. This settlement was a melting pot of smaller kampungs: Lobang Bom, Tanjong Irau, Wak Hassan, and Tengah. Originally called Masjid Kampung Tengah, it became a central point of worship for the growing Muslim community. Before Masjid Pertempatan Melayu Sembawang existed, the faithful prayed in smaller suraus or journeyed to the Masjid Jumah Sembawang along Sembawang Road. The desire for a local mosque spurred the community into action. They pooled their resources, contributing what they could. Even the Lee Foundation donated a significant sum of $10,000 to the cause. In the 1980s, the surrounding kampungs were dismantled as residents relocated to public housing. Demolition loomed over Masjid Pertempatan Melayu Sembawang. Thanks to the unwavering dedication of residents and then Member of Parliament, Dr. Tony Tan, the mosque received a Temporary Occupation Lease, securing its future. Renovations in 1984 and further upgrades in 2007 breathed new life into the old structure. A towering rubber tree, a relic of the old rubber plantations, still stands guard at the entrance. Today, though secluded, Masjid Pertempatan Melayu Sembawang remains a vibrant hub. Friday prayers and Ramadan celebrations fill the space with life. Weekend madrasah classes and religious teachings continue within its walls, echoing the enduring spirit of the community that built it.
