At Soekarno-Hatta International Airport stands a serene sanctuary. It is the Masjid Nurul Barkah. This mosque serves as a spiritual oasis for travelers and airport staff alike.

Masjid Nurul Barkah’s story began modestly. It started as a small prayer room made of woven bamboo. This simple space met the growing need for worship facilities after the airport’s inauguration in 1984.

President Soeharto officially opened the first Masjid Nurul Barkah building on October 9 1987. The original design featured a traditional three-tiered pyramid roof. This is a style popularized by the Yayasan Amal Bhakti Muslim Pancasila. It could accommodate 1200 worshipers.

Recognizing the need for expansion Masjid Nurul Barkah underwent significant renovations. Two open-sided pavilions were added. These feature unique roofs resembling inverted craters similar to those of the Salman Mosque at ITB Bandung. Four minarets were also erected at each corner of the mosque. Their height was carefully considered due to the proximity to the airport’s flight paths.

The expansion project was completed on March 31 2000. Miskul Firdaus the Director of Angkasa Pura inaugurated it. Today Masjid Nurul Barkah can accommodate up to 4000 people. Its 3600 square meter area provides ample space for prayer and reflection.

Masjid Nurul Barkah is strategically located on the main road to and from the airport. It sits between the access roads to Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 opposite the Angkasapura office. Anyone traveling to Soekarno-Hatta Airport will pass this mosque. A row of white pillars along the northern corridor faces the main road marking its presence.

The Yayasan Masjid Nurul Barkah manages the mosque. It was established on April 25 1986. The mosque primarily serves airport employees. However passengers are welcome to visit.

Financially Masjid Nurul Barkah is supported by PT Angkasa Pura II. The airport operator covers monthly operational costs. Generous donations from worshipers also contribute significantly. These donations are managed by the Yayasan Amal Zakat Infaq dan Sadakoh. The foundation distributes funds to underprivileged communities around the airport. It also provides scholarships to outstanding students from nearby junior and senior high schools.

Architecturally Masjid Nurul Barkah blends Indonesian and Middle Eastern elements. The original three-tiered roof reflects Indonesian traditions. The added minarets and pendopo roofs add a modern touch. Inside copper chandeliers adorn the ceilings. Light streams through the windows.

Masjid Nurul Barkah is more than just a place of worship. It is a symbol of faith community and generosity. It is a welcoming space for all who seek solace and spiritual connection amidst the hustle and bustle of the airport. Take a moment to appreciate the unique architecture and the mosque’s role in serving the community.
