Stepping inside Masjid Nurul Ajam, imagine a blend of architectural styles. Right here, in the Kemenlinghut complex near Palmerah Station, stands this mosque, a unique fusion of Middle Eastern and traditional Javanese design. Masjid Nurul Ajam translates to “Light of the non-Arabs”. This mosque showcases a golden dome and blue accents on its minarets and upper walls, creating a striking visual contrast. Four minarets rise from each corner, a hallmark of Middle Eastern mosque architecture. But look closer, and you’ll notice the Javanese touch. The limasan-style roof, a traditional Javanese architectural element, adds a local flavor. Intricate geometric patterns, resembling house silhouettes, adorn the terrace arches and window frames. These details hint at the mosque’s connection to the Yayasan Amal Bhakti Muslim Pancasila (YAMP). Originally named Masjid Yayasan Amal Bakti Muslim Pancasila, Masjid Nurul Ajam was inaugurated in 1993. It later underwent renovations, reopening in 2014. The two-story mosque offers a spacious prayer area, accommodating around 2,800 worshippers. The main prayer hall on the second floor features a mihrab, a niche indicating the direction of prayer, shaped like a house silhouette, echoing the patterns found throughout the mosque. Inside the mihrab, you will find a simple yet elegant calligraphy of Allah. A permanent, black marble mimbar stands nearby, inscribed with the mosque’s name in golden Arabic script. The cream-colored altar wall has decorative, YAMP-style blind windows. A digital clock displays prayer times and Islamic messages. The wooden ceiling and green carpeted floor create a calming ambiance. Eight air conditioners and four wall fans provide comfort for worshippers.
